Homestar Assessor Qualification

This two day course has been designed for those who wish to use the Certified Tool for design purposes or who want to certify homes with a Homestar rating. The course focuses on teaching an in-depth understanding of the categories and credits, the key principles behind the tool and how to accurately assess a home against the Certified Homestar rating tool. The Homestar Assessor qualification enables you to produce Homestar Certified Assessments for your design or for your clients to validate the environmental attributes of their dwelling.

Course participants

This course is targeted at those who wish to conduct Homestar Assessments for stand-alone or attached residential buildings. It is also suitable for those who wish to use the tool to assist them to maximize the Homestar points achievable during the design process. The Assessor qualification requires a good knowledge of building design and/or construction plus an understanding of the measurement of thermal performance.

Recommended pre-requisites

  • Sustainability understanding and/or
  • Audit experience and/or
  • Survey work and/or
  • Building practices experience

Professional qualification: (Equivalent professional qualifications may be submitted for approval)

  • Licensed Building Practitioner Level 2 and 3
  • Registered valuer, engineer, architect, building scientist/technologist, quantity surveyor
  • EDA
  • HERS Assessor

Course outline

The two day Homestar Assessor course focuses on teaching an in-depth understanding of the theory and application of the Certified Homestar rating tool. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the process of conducting an environmental assessment of residential stand-alone and attached homes. They will also learn the requirements around acquiring and collating appropriate documentation and managing and producing a Homestar Design Rating and Certified Assessment.

The programme consists of:

  • 1 day of classroom tuition
  • 1 day practical application of the Certified Tool
  • Post course completion of an online examination within 2 weeks
  • Post course completion of a practical written examination within 4 weeks
  • Post course completion of a Certified Assessment under supervision within 6 months

Following the successful completion of the assessment process, Assessors will be required to sign the Homestar Assessor Agreement, which contains the terms and conditions under which they agree to operate as a Homestar Assessor.

Please note: The post course exam and supervised assessment are mentored projects and as such may take some time to complete. Please ensure that there is sufficient time available post training to complete these tasks to a high standard.

Also note that should the supervisor have concerns about the participant's ability to accurately conduct an assessment, that participant may be asked to successfully complete a further assessment before the qualification is awarded.

Renewal, CPD and other professional development points.

NZGBC requires holders of Homestar qualifications to renew their qualifications every two years. Prior to Qualification renewal the holder must have accrued two Further Education points. Information on FE points and qualifications’ renewal can be found on the website here.

NZGBC has negotiated with other professional bodies for CPD recognition of the Homestar Practitioner qualification. A list of the participating organisations and the allocated points follows.

NZGBC will make all efforts to inform participating organisations of the attendance of their members. However It is the responsibility of the qualification holder to ensure these points are allocated.

Industry CPD points

For attendance at this training course:

  • NZRAB - New Zealand Registered Architects receive 40 CPD points
  • NZIBS - New Zealand Institute of Building Surveyors members may claim CPD hours
  • NZIQS - New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors members may claim CPD hours(Short Course/Education – Column 9)
  • IPENZ - Institute of Professional Engineers New Zealand members may claim CPD hours (Competency 11)
  • LBP - Licensed Building Practitioners may claim 12 skills maintenance points
  • NZIOB - New Zealand Institute of Building members may claim 6 CPD credits (as per CPD Table)
  • ADNZ - Members of Architectural Designers New Zealand receive 16 CPD points
