Is heat recovery ventilation good for New Zealand homes?


Learning outcomes:

  • The size of the moisture and ventilation problem in New Zealand homes.
  • The relationship between insulation, ventilation, and heating and moisture (e.g. ‘the moisture chart’).
  • What is the goal? The ideal ventilation rate for New Zealand homes.
  • How to test for and achieve this goal.
  • Current and future research.
  • What is Passive house and is it relevant in New Zealand.

Stream 2: session 2

Making every drop count: water efficiency for high-performance homes


Learning outcomes:

  • Understand the Homestar mandatory minimums for water performance.
  • Understand the WELS system and the value it provides; including the opportunity for operational savings within the home.
  • Understand the tools available to help you deliver water efficiency.
  • Help provide homeowners and occupiers with resilient homes, able to provide water following climatic and seismic events.
  • Learn what different home system interventions can help a home be more water efficient, and the energy implications

  • How installation is a factor in the system’s success.
  • What is the return on investment and payback period.
  • How can you communicate this to your client.

Stream 2: session 3

Lost in translation: the pitfalls and opportunities of communication and project management on a sustainable build


Learning outcomes:

  • Which aspects of a sustainable build require particular attention.
  • Where client expectations and reality intersect – the communication barriers that occur.
  • Avoiding the mistakes – key traps for new players.
  • What an informed project manager can add to the project.
  • Tips for up-skilling and managing uninformed sub-contractors.
  • The costs of poor project management.

Opportunities and impacts of efficient lighting 


Learning outcomes:

  • Defining the quality and benefits of sustainable lighting solutions.
  • Aspects relating to indoor environment quality ‘health and safety’ and ‘comfort’.
  • Incorporating ‘integrated design’ principles such as building orientation, day lighting, skylights and use of reflective colour and surfaces
  • Product evolution of new lighting technologies, including case study evidence in providing quality, energy efficient lighting solutions.
  • Skills and resources available for procurement issues.
  • Alternative options to down-lights
  • Integration with alternative power sources such as pv and wind

Stream 2: session 4
