Green Star NZ Education Rating Tool

The latest version, updated 31 August 2009

IMPORTANT:  We have identified some loss of functionality in our Excel tools due to versioning of Microsoft Office - we are currently looking to rectify this and appreciate your patience whilst these fixes are taking place.

Thank you very much to everyone who provided feedback on the PILOT version of this new tool.  Click here to view a summary of changes.

The Green Star NZ – Education 2009 rating tool assesses entire education buildings, including their fitout. This differs from other Green Star rating tools, which have been designed to address base building and fitouts separately. This is as a result of education buildings generally being owner occupied, so the tool can aid with the design of a building envelope through to the interior fitout. The tool is capable of rating individual buildings through to whole new school campuses. Additional guidance for rating whole new campuses will be available from the NZGBC website soon.

Users of this tool include primarily of the Ministry of Education, Principals, Board of Trustees and their consultants, with the tool able to rate schools (from Primary through to High Schools), childcare facilities, Universities and other tertiary education facilities. This tool enables these parties to minimise the environmental impacts of their developments and to capitalise on, and receive recognition for, their design initiatives.

Eligibility

Childcare facilities, schools or tertiary education facilities will be eligible for a rating under Green Star – Education 2009 where 80% of the building’s GFA is used for education purposes. Further detail on the eligibility and certain exclusions from the tool can be found within the Green Star excel tool downloadable below.

Please note that there are also four conditional requirements within the Green Star NZ – Education Design tool, these relate to energy use, base ventilation rates, ecological value of the site and the incorporation of features that function as learning resources within the design.
