At thinkstep-anz we want sustainability to be the foundation of New Zealand’s built environment.

Our point of difference is to combine corporate and product sustainability, underpinned by leading software solutions and data. We’re always looking to push the boundaries of sustainability by working towards Circular Economies, Cradle to Cradle, and Regenerative Futures for our clients.

We want to see sustainable practices adopted across all areas of New Zealand’s built environment for the betterment of the natural environment and our communities. Our industry experience covers the full value chain across New Zealand and Australia. It ranges from working in building and construction (e.g. Fletcher Building, Naylor Love), material manufacturers (e.g. Pink Batts, GIB Plasterboard, Abodo, Knauf, BlueScope and Dulux), manufacturers of components used in fitouts (e.g. Methven, David Trubridge and Zip), associations (e.g. Metals NZ, WPMA and Concrete NZ), developers and investment companies (e.g. Stride Property).

Our services include:

  • Life Cycle Assessments (LCA)
  • Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)
  • Carbon Footprints
  • Carbon Targets and Strategy
  • Circular Economy projects
  • Cradle to Cradle Assessments
  • Materiality assessments
  • Supporting organisation to communicate their Green Building initiatives (Green Star)

Our software solution SoFi provides powerful reporting on carbon and sustainability as well as relevant emissions factors. Our GaBi software solution helps companies identify and reduce the life cycle emissions of their products and services.

thinkstep-anz and Green Building

In 2019 thinkstep-anz was one of only 81 organisations worldwide to endorse the challenge set by The World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) in their ‘Bringing Embodied Carbon Upfront’ report. The report set a target to cut embodied carbon emissions for building and infrastructure by 40 percent by 2030 and achieve 100 per cent net zero emissions for buildings by 2050.

In August 2019, thinkstep-anz published ‘Hotspot or not? The carbon footprint of NZ's built environment’ finding that New Zealand’s built environment may be responsible for approximately 20 percent of New Zealand’s gross carbon footprint. This was closely followed by our white paper published on behalf of NZGBC titled ‘Under Construction: Hidden emissions and untapped potential of buildings for New Zealand’s 2050 zero carbon goal’, outlining opportunities to decarbonise New Zealand’s building and construction sector.

Walking the talk

We believe in ‘walking the talk’ internally with a carbon reduction target approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). thinkstep-anz is 100% locally owned and is a certified B Corporation. We are a signatory to the UN Global Compact and the New Zealand Climate Leaders Coalition. We also incorporate nine of the seventeen UN Global Development Goals into our current and future organisational strategies. These are SDGs 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 17.
