Embodied Carbon Masterclass

The intention is for this to be hands-on training aimed at building professionals getting to grips with the concept of embodied carbon. Released at the end of March 2023 following months of detailed industry consultation, this is your chance to hear from two industry experts involved in the design and testing of this leading approach hot off the press.

During the session you’ll work through a set of tools that help define the scope and methodology, and guide you on the calculation of embodied carbon. Roll up your sleeves and be prepared to get into the detail.

Background

The 2019 Under Construction report by thinkstep anz revealed buildings and infrastructure contributes around 20% of New Zealand’s carbon emissions. With embodied carbon accounting for around half of that, the industry has been asking for a way to measure and reduce their footprint.

The recent updates to version 1.1 of the Green Star Design & As-Built tool included a new conditional requirement under Credit 19 to address embodied carbon, with projects required to demonstrate a reduction of at least 10% compared to a reference building.

Masterclass participants

The Embodied Carbon Masterclass is designed for industry professionals who are interested in embodied carbon and are wanting to get a full understanding of the use of the embodied carbon calculator.

The masterclass is best suited for those who:

• Have basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel
• Green Star Accredited Professionals
• Architects/Designers
• Engineers
• Quantity Surveyors and other building professionals

This masterclass will cover:

• Defining embodied carbon and upfront carbon?
• How to measure embodied carbon in practice
• Understand NZGBC’s tool and guides for embodied carbon in non-residential buildings:

  • Embodied Carbon Calculator Guide
  • Embodied Carbon Methodology
• Worked example using the Embodied Carbon Calculator for a case study building
• Participants will need to bring along their own laptop and we’ll circulate the link to download the Embodied Carbon Calculator in advance.
