Affects of large housing on resource use and occupant behaviour in NZ

Iman Khajehzadeh, PhD student in Architecture at the Victoria University of Wellington, told us more about his PhD research on a new phenomenon in NZ called “large housing”. From 1974 to 2011 the average new house in NZ has almost doubled in size while occupancy has reduced in the same period. Iman explained how housing decisions highly affect energy consumption and how human behaviour is as, if not more, important than technical features for sustainable housing. View presentation.

Attendees also heard from:

  • Daiman Otto, Group Manager - Architecture & Design at Hampton Jones Property Consultancy and PrefabNZ Board Chair.
  • Emelia Atkins and Megan Keats, VUW Architecture students.
  • Greg Eunson, Category Leader at Ministry of Education.
  • Simon Novak, Director at Novak+Middleton.
