Under Construction: Hidden emissions and untapped potential of buildings for New Zealand’s 2050 zero carbon goal

Jeff Vickers from thinkstep is diving deeply into the recent report- Under Construction: Hidden emissions and untapped potential of buildings for New Zealand’s 2050 zero carbon goal, exploring the impact that building materials will have on the effort to achieve a net-zero carbon building stock at the national level.

The published findings, combined with earlier research revealed that New Zealand’s built environment is responsible for belching out approximately 20 percent of the country’s carbon emissions. The newer report found that the key materials contributing to embodied GHG emissions in New Zealand’s buildings are steel and concrete, which contribute more than 50% of the carbon footprint of both residential and non-residential construction (excluding fit-out).

Jeff also talks to the collaborative effort that will enable us to achieve or exceed the 40% decarbonisation potential identified in this report.
